I've seen some stuff printed out before and vehicles, dreads and such come out decent but very blocky. I can't imagine them being able to do tiny arms and hands and guns but i imagine the technology will advance to that point some day.

Someday will be here very soon. As of right now, REAL GUN parts are being printed (not toys), other things including working clocks, lamps and models. Its straight out of Star Trek man  http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2013/02/13/cars-moon-bases-and-even-guns-3d-printing-takes-off/

I'm just saying, would people rather give companies $100 for a Carnifex or print their own for the wholesale cost of plastic.

Makerbot replicator 2 costs $2000 and has 0.1 millimeter resolution.

Not exactly GW finecast resolution, but that should be enough to print out e.g. termagants where you wouldn't be able to tell the difference from the original.

A lot of people have paid more then $2000 to be in the wargaming hobby, or to own a computer. As the 3D Printing technology gets cheaper and more advanced then it will be more available to the public. Think of where computers were 5 years ago, and imagine where 3D printing will be 5 years from now.

Yeah, that was what I was trying to say... if it's only $2000 now (I believe this is actually a COLOR 3d printer btw), in 5 years it will be cheaper than most 1000 point armies.

We'll still need sculpters and if Gw oofloads the manufacturing then that's a win. So GW will start selling patterns, and materials that work "best" with said patters.

But the universe is a big place and, whatever happens, you will not be missed...

Why do we need sculpters? That is the entire purpose of the machine. The file patterns will most likely be created by many independant developers and downloaded by us, the users.. its like in The Matrix when Neo says "I need guns, lots of guns." The topic we were discussing was creating our own models without buying them from GW.

if I where to ever get a 3D printer (I do plan to get one in the next 7 years after prices come down a bit & I get a better paying job/ more hours) I would most likely only print Forge world or custom parts. The way I feel is when you download a codex off the internet, your not only stealing from GW, but also from Battlegrounds, (to me) 3D printers are no different.

If you can't afford something, don't buy it.  This argument is how Brockton happened.

Sorry everyone I think I wasn't clear enough, I was just describing how the technology works and how it could potentially be used(or misused) by people in general. I personally have supported battlegrounds since 2005 and have personally purchased about 20,000 points worth of warhammer models from BG since then(av 2500pt/year), do the $math$. I always have and will support battlegrounds :)
