Getting started playing Warhammer 40k at Battlegrounds.
« on: April 14, 2011, 05:26:45 PM »
Hello, I am in need of a little assistance with getting started at Battlegrounds. First and foremost, do I sign up somewhere or can I just swing by and try to get into a game. I understand that Warhammer 40k is commonly played on most Thursdays. I would also like to get a little guidance on how to get started with a Dark Eldar army. I don't need a massive army or anything and would like to keep everything (books, miniatures, etc.) under about 60$. Plus what does the store sell for Dark Eldar stuff?

Hi
thay play on Sat. all day also. everyone is awsome and will help newbe's learn the
game first thing to do is get the Dark Eldar codex then start collecting your army
To start you need an HQ unit and two Troop units, then you build your force from
there. to start it will probely cost you around $100 or so and Derek carries a good selection
GW products.
Brandan and I are planning on coming to BG sat. the 16th around 7pm if you want to meet us
we'll let you try a game with us.

Thursday nights in Plainville have a solid group of players, just swing by and introduce yourself. We're usually there around 6:30 PM and are all casual. Like, we'll be there tonight.

The Plainville store represents all 40k factions pretty well on the shelves, definitely enough to get started. If you're getting started, usually the big Battleforce boxes (between $90-100) are actually a deal given the models inside. Codex is likely to run you about $25. All together a bit out of your stated price range, but then that's everyone and Warhammer. :)

40k gets played on a daily basis in Abington.  If you're looking to game at a specific time I suggest posting here ahead of time.  With that said, you're pretty likely to get a game anytime you walk in to the store there.

There are many players that can help you get started.  There is no need to sign up anywhere if you're just looking for a game.  Many of the "regulars" that frequent the store are very knowledgeable and can probably help you whenever the staff can not.

The Plainville store has two different Warhammer nights, Tuesday and Thursday.  Tuesday doesn't really have much of a focus and you're likely to see both Fantasy and 40k being played.  Thursday in Plainville is the official "unofficial" 40k night.  There are typically several games going on each Thursday starting around 630 or 7pm.  The guys there really know their stuff and can definitely help you out.  They are great with new players and are all extremely cool to hang out with.

There are several Dark Eldar players that frequent this message board also.  I will direct them to this thread.

Happy hunting!

Thank you very much! I visited the store in Plainville last night and did a "sit in" on a game my friend was playing with a few other guys. It was pretty cool! Everyone is friendly and the shop has some cool terrain tables. Expect to see me on Thursdays with an awesome Dark Eldar army...
P.S. Should I pick up a rulebook too? Nobody said much about that, so i'm just checking.  :)

You should probably ask your friend if you can borrow his rulebook for now, rulebooks are around $60 dollars which included with the army itself puts you way above your original price range.

However, a rulebook is a pretty essential part to becoming well versed in the mechanics of 40k and being able to check the rules mid-game is nice too. So you should buy one as soon as you have the means to.

Or find someone buying the black reach box set and offer him something for the small rulebook that comes  with it.

Wait, you want to play 40k on the budget of $60? lolwut???

An army is like easily $300 minimum for a small/decent sized army.  $60 gets you maybe a 500 point game which most other players can't even get a legal army that low.  Maybe you should look into either malifaux or expanding your budget a couple paychecks.

good luck though

Hi, I just wanted to say I bought a rulebook and a set of Dark Eldar Kalabite warriors (basic infantry) along with an HQ (Lelith Hesperax). I've gotten to work on painting them and finished making all of them about ten minutes ago. I can't wait to try them out on "the field." I haven't calculated how many points they are yet but, i'm guessing around 500 or so. But yeah, it's pretty cool, thanks for all your help.
