Making the deathstrike usable?
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:37:52 AM »
I was having a couple drinks last night with a buddy who plays IG. We got to talking about some of the tanks that no one plays. Naturally the deathstrike came up. We got to thinking about how to play them.

Our thinking was to take 7 chimera's  (C) and 3 deathstrike's (D) with camo netting and do the following at a table edge;

     CCCCC
     CDDDC

That way any shots that hit the deathstrikes would get a 2+ cover save. Because you can not see the AV you are shooting at you would get a 3+ save and the netting would drop it to a 2+. Then statistically 1 should go off round 2 barring any glancing shots, then 1 the following round.
For those that don't know deathstrike is a 1 shot str 10 ap1 3+d3 radius blast with no coversaves.

Not sure how effective it would be but would be funny to say "Launch zee missiile" for every shot.

and I got the idea partially from this;

Ahh  Beer, it does lend for creative ideas.

So would that be the entire Army?

By my point count, going from memory at work  ;D it would be about 1600 for;

HQ: Commander, las, chimera
T: lt. Pwr fist. 4 flamers.  chimera
-Platoon with missile / Grenade Launcher in chimera
-Platoon with missile in chimera
T: lt. Pwr fist. 4 flamers.  chimera
-Platoon with missile / Grenade Launcher in chimera
-Platoon with missile / melta in chimera
T: vet with 2 melta. Missile Launcher. Chimera
H:Deathstrike with cammo netting
H:Deathstrike with cammo netting
H:Deathstrike with cammo netting

then you could adapt from there say 1750 throw in a devil dog or vendetta and upgrade some of the special or heavy weapons. Maybe a techpriest or two to sandwich in the back. For higher points a big blob of consripts with a commisar attached running forward to delay / block units would be good as well.

I would use the vets and extra tank to take care of anything getting close to the launch zone or at least tie units up so the launch continues!

is the death strike the one with a minimum range? even so it seems pretty cool to me, since people who play guard tend to like army stuff and like old war things on history channel. point being its more of a realistic force. not to mention a 2+ save on a vehicle is awesome

This reminds me of a pure artilary list Chad thought of. Nothing but Basilisks, Griffons and death strikes for heavy support and lots of guard platoons kitted with lots of motar teams. Using chimeras to make a blockade.

The deathstrike has a minimum range of 12 which isn't that big of a deal since it can move 6 and still fire (I think). I think 3 manticore's would be more nasty but the weapon has a minimum of 24' so you have to find ways to keep your opponents at that distance which can be tough, wall of chimera's or hellhound varients sounds the easiest.

I've played against the all artillery list before. In fact saltlick who posted here has done it. I had to fight 9 griffon's and something like 20+ mortars.
