lifelink problem

i was playing a game of extended and i ran into a problem over lifelink. if i cast an enchantment which gives lifelink to an opponents creature who gets the life when the creature deals damage? i thought since i cast the enchantment i would gain the life (essentially nulifying the damage)

lifelink mean when a creature deals damage to anything, its controler gains life equal to the damage that creature dealt. if you cast spirt link(an older card) its text said "when enchanted creature deals damage, you gain that much life", so if the creature has lifelink, then they gain life, if they have spritlink, then you gain the life
