When's the next BG 40k tournament?
« on: August 26, 2009, 02:17:31 PM »
Just curious.

It'd be funny to do something funny like a Kill Team tournament. Or a planetstrike tournament.

Just seeing this now, Mike.  I'll post tomorrow from the store.... the answer is a little more complicated than it might seem.

We are planning an event that is likely to happen in the middle of October...  I think it is being planned for 2500 points...  It's in the "drawing board" phases now.  I'll post more in the morning (afternoon).

We have been talking with Chris O'Brien, one of the guys who used to organize tournaments at Danger Planet, about running an event here in the not-so-distant future.

We have had some trouble nailing down a specific date due to several different things...  September is a busy month and October is kicked off by a Magic release event.

Details are still up in the air, but here are some ideas...

2500 points
1v1
Somewhat different scoring...  we may try to use Chris' scoring system, which looks a lot like what we used to use... for better or worse.

Here it is:

Battle:  15/10/5 for win, loss, or draw, with up to 5 bonus points each round based on objectives.  This encourages players to play it out, cause even if you are losing you can get bonus points.  Total points you can gain is 60

Comp: Player lists are judged by the people running the event, give a score of 1-10.  Army lists are paired purely by comp in the first round, then winning lists play similarly comped winning lists in the second round.  Thrid round is strict battle.  Comp is mainly there to reward players who take softer armies, and to help prevent lop-sided matchups.  We usually have 2 comp judges for a total score of 20

Painting: Painting used to be all player judged, and not part of the overall.  Players would vote for their 3 top armies, and the army with the most votes one the prize.  If we include painting in the overall two paint judges would rate the armies on a 1-10 scale for a total of 20 points

Sportsmanship:  I have a 5 point checklist for sportsmanship:

Precision:  My opponent didn’t fudge guess ranges or move units sloppily.

Generosity:  If a rule was unclear or could go either way, my opponent was willing to let rules questions go my way, or consult the books or judges to get a quick answer to their problem.

Efficiency:  My opponent played in a quick and timely manner.

Composure: My opponent displayed grace under fire, not blowing up and getting upset when the dice didn’t roll his way.

Camaraderie:  My opponent played a fun game of Warhammer, where both of us felt engaged and had a good time playing.

By making these mostly objective, it keeps people from tanking other players in sports.  We've found over time that most people get full marks in sportsmanship, with the occasional -1 or -2.  Sportsmanship is worth 15 points.

We usually do awards for Best Painted, Best Sports, Best General, and Best Overall.  This is flexible, as is the breakdown for soft scores.

Again, things are not set in stone.  Feedback would be cool, although I can't promise anything.

The number of seats will be capped somewhere between 20 and 24.  When we finalize a date for the event it'll be a "please call and let us know ASAP" type of thing.  The DP guys seem like they will account for quite a few so having people call or talk to us is the most reasonable way to handle this.  We need a bigger space!!! Gah!

Im in either way I like 2500 But also think that 2000 might be better for that many people.  Judging seems good.  Lets get the BG reserve spots set up.

I think that painting not being included in Best Overall is a little silly.

Painting is a big part of the hobby, and I don't think it should be exclude from an award titled Best Overall. Best overall in my experience has been the best person to play, had a fair army, and a decently painted army.

I also agree with 2K 2500 is to much

2k is pretty cool but 2500 should be a different event, like a gladiator style (which I highly endorse).

I think a 2500 gladiator Adepticon Style would rock!

for those that don't know you can basically sacrifice 2 heavies to take a super-heavy, with restriction's (i.e. you can't use any game altering silly apoc special rules confered by the super-heavy)
