I'm not to prove that I was right to rule it that way, I'm trying to prove that it's possible for reasonable people to come to a variety of conclusions about rules like this, and that therefore in the absence of an official FAQ, games at the same event will be played using different rules.

I'd rather not see ETC rules. Their game, despite being the same game, is somehow quite different. Once NOVA FAQ gets finalized, it'll probably work fine.

If the rules weren't written vague enough reasonable might disagree, we wouldn't need a FAQ, right?  I'm confused.

Regardless, out of all options, I'd prefer to use the NOVA FAQ.
