Hordes Question
« on: June 08, 2012, 06:29:13 PM »
I have been intrigued by Warmahordes for a while now.  I some point I am going to demo the game on Thursday night....

But anyway, I was poking around and I have to say, the Trollkin are pretty badass.  Love the models and the Scottish and Ale attitude of them.  So my question is, if someone was going to start a Trollkin Army, where would someone start?  I am thinking about putting some models on my wish list and maybe my wife will pick me up some stuff and I can start Hordes to supplement my current 40K addiction.

And a second question, I just see people in plainville playing Warmachine.  Since I know that Hordes use different but compatible rules, is it really difficult playing a Horde Army against a Warmachine army?

jfoodmaster is the man to talk to about what to get for starting trolls.

Hordes and Warmachine play together just fine. I often find my Khador getting steamrolled by Legion or Circle.

I'd echo that Sean/jfoodmaster is your guy for Trolls.

As far as Hordes vs. Warmachine goes, the systems use the same core rules and its totally normal for the varying factions of each to throw down with each other. One thing to know about both Warmachine and Hordes is that its very matchup based (hence why you bring two lists to tournaments). That proves just as true when you'd use your Trolls against other Hordes armies, as when you'd fight against a Warmachine army.

Last night Keith and I played Circle vs. Cygnar and had a great game -- eBaldur vs. Kraye. Conversely I lost with Kraye to a Morvahna list a few weeks ago. My opponent had a lot of tricks in his list to mitigate my army's strengths, and in hindsight I should have changed my caster out for that game.

The first Game I played was Cygnar vs Skorne. I have to say its Real Easy to understand the differences between the 2 and that fundamentally they are the same.

Playing against either Warmachine or Hordes will end up forcing you to learn to use different tactics very fast, but otherwise they face against each other just fine. Everything is just broken in some shape way or form between the factions. Trolls in this case; they hit hard and just won't die!
I got a 1!....That's a good thing, right?

A good place to start is the Troll starter set. The next step would be to pick up a heavy of some kind. I would recommend a Bomber or a Mauler. Then your best pick up would be a unit of Kriel Warriors. If you are interested in the UA's the Caber Thrower is good but not necessary but the musician and standard bearer are extremely good. That is a great place to start a solid trolls army in my opinion.

Also, if you are up for doing a little extra work, you can try magnetizing your trolls heavy. The new plastic heavy kit comes with all three options, but only one body, so you magnetize the arms so you can witch out which troll you want depending on the situation. This takes time and effort, but their are plenty of tutorials online.

Yay! Trolls! They sometimes seem like the joke of the game cuz they're a little goofy. I think that flavor along with the Scottish thing is really awesome. We get together on thursday nights in Abington to play Warmachine/Hordes.

As far as what to play: You should pick a Warlock you like. The starter isn't OPTIMAL for Trollbloods, but it's great to learn to play and gives you a couple of utility warbeasts. Also, Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftan is the Warlock that comes in the box and he is awesome. So, if you're gonna start, the Starter Box plus a plastic Dire Troll kit is great! After that you could fill it out with some infantry. Fennblades are great in game and economical. You could get a Krielstone Bearer unit to make your infantry harder to kill. You could get a Janissa Stonetide who is an awesome utility solo.

Those are by no means what you have to buy, but it's a good place to start. I could talk all day about Trolls! I picked them as my main faction and I've been super happy with how they play and how they look.

Hordes is a fun game system. It is very much a risk management system (the fury mechanic) vs Warmachine which is an asset management (the focus mechanic). I like the risk vs reward decisions you have to make in Hordes. I play fast and loose.

I'd be happy to give you a demo on a thursday night. I've got a full Troll starter that I could show you. If you've got any more questions, drop me a PM. I'm not the best list builder if you're looking for competition but I have alot of fun with this faction.

I've got all of that stuff minus the Fennblades, which are currently out of stock through both distributors.
