Wood Elves vs. High Elves?
« on: January 16, 2012, 05:51:46 PM »
Ok so in the far (and i mean far) future i would really like to get into WHFB.  I would really like to be wood elves but from what i hear thier codex hasn't been updated in a while and they might be "on thier way out". So... I was just wondering if there was any talk about a new codex any time soon. Thanks king of the Elves.

Hard to say when their book is coming out, the most reliable rumors are that empire is next to be followed by warriors.

You should really think about the type of game you wanna play.  Wood elves are a bit out dated, and they are not getting a codex anytime soon.  At least there are no rumors of one in the works or on the way.

When you think about the game do you want a small elite army? Cool big monster force? lots of robin hood type archers? Heavy armor with big beat sticks and poor conversational skills?

Basically, without prior knowledge of the game I would go with the style of play you think you would enjoy.  If you have no idea look for a practice game with someone to show you how to play with just a simple army and based on that see which army you think would appeal to you more.  If you want to play wood elves go nuts, they are fun there is just a lot of FAQ and errata to add to the codex since they haven't been given a new codex about 2 full editions (maybe more I forget how the time-line goes).

Side not in the Wood vs High battle, Wood elves get Treemen (cool) High elves get heroes spell casters that can ride dragons (cool, except when you have to deal with them as opponents. Dragons are only fun when you field them ;p )

Just going more off of  jester's post, I'd recommend choosing based on models that you like. All armies struggle in some environments and excel in others (wood elves are at the bottom of the pack, dark elves at the very top, but woodies dominate dark elves for example).

I am looking for a lot of archers, i like magic and war machines and all but i would like 2 things in my army: elves and archers. Based apon this would wood elves be good even know they are outdated, high elves where i can mabey split the island of blood starter kit with someone or dark elves? Thanks, Elf King.

All the elves can do an army of almost every unit carrying some type of ranged weapon.

Wood elves and high elves use bow (24" range) and long bows (30" range) on most of their stuff.  The  Dark Elves make use of repeater crossbows (24" range but can fire twice with a -1 to hit on the dice rolls)

So, yea the ranged aspect kinda just brings you full circle since they all have a lot of shooting.  Its a little easier to explain this stuff in person because we can just go to the models and you kinda get a better feel for what your dealing with.  Next time I'm down I'll hit you up if you have time and maybe I can help ya find something you like.   As for learning I know your focusing on 40k Guard, but if ya wanna take a break and learn hit me up.  I have Vampires and Skaven for armies, obviously they aren't close to what your looking to play but trying a game out will give you an idea of the way you wanna approach your army list.
