Tournament assistance
« on: November 14, 2010, 12:27:26 PM »
so,

after learning the game from the best the store has to offer (ben, troy, murph, riley, kevin, chris, rick, etc.). Ive decided to finally try the tournament sceene. two questions came up:

1. how does everyone find out the dates and places and how do they sign up? and
2. im short 15 points in my list (2500) can anyone give suggestions to what to do with them?

hq
Daemon Prince - MoS, wings, Lash of submission

troops
Plague Marines (9) - champion w/ powerfist, 2x meltagun, rhino w/ havoc launcher

Plague Marines (9) - champion w/ powerfist, 2x meltagun, rhino w/ havoc launcher
Plague Marines (9) - champion w/ powerfist, 2x meltagun, rhino w/ havoc launcher
Noise Marines (5) - champion w/ powersword + doom siren, 3x sonic blaster, blastmaster
Thousand Sons (9) - aspiring sorcerer w/ winds of chaos

heavy support
Vindicator - daemonic possesion
Obliterator cult (3)

that comes out to be 2485, and i cannot think of anything that makes since to do with the last 15.

any advice is welcome, since i know everyone here is very wise and helpful!

Thank You!
~Dave

Ok, so trolling aside,

1. Just keep your ears and eyes open / go to many forums.
2. The list is pretty boring and well in the age of mech (5th edition) the lash only serves to be a badge of dishonor / "that guy".

Will it be effective?  You would probably be ok.   You would stomp some new people?  Sure.  Veterans would just snipe the dps and then dismantle the list appropriately.

Also, you almost never hear of tournaments running 2500 point lists.

aren't most gw tournaments 2500 (ie ard boyz)?

also, so far in all my games the DP has done 1 of 2 things:
1. died doing nothing besides fly around
2. after something opens up a transport, he lashes the passengers into a sea of bullets

hence why my record is almost split between wins/losses

at 1500 what do you suggest i leave/swap out?

p.s. i dont mind losing a couple games, just as long as im not tabled or slaughtered.

Ard Boyz is the only GW sanctioned tournament all year.

Most are 1500, 1750 or 1850.

At 1500?  Pick a god or go undivided.  Lash will only hurt your sportsmanship / comp.  It won't actually help you.  If everyone is mech, why take something that has such a reputation for douchery?  My Nurgle DP is a hero as is the Tzeentch one.

Going mono god can work quite well with the CSM codex.

Also, noise marines are terrible.  I say it as a Khorne / Nurgle player.  Also, Thousand Sons are terrible unless you are only fighting marines.  They are very situational.

Plague marines in Rhinos are dumb.  Not like a bad idea dumb but a big red EASY BUTTON dumb.  It's almost like the story designers knew how monstrous a unit they could be so the fluff was about how the Death Guard was walking death.  Trust in their brothers and their bolters to walk across the line like men and kill their opponents.

I could go on and on about the CSM codex and how I personally play it.  The codex is hurting right now because they removed a lot of fluff / flavor / restrictions that made CSM awesome.

but i'm playing black legion csm, i cant just have one god  ::) besides thousand sons and noise marines got cool stuff so i couldnt resist taking a unit of each. The casual games ive played prove the list to be very capable, it all typically depends on how i roll. the havoc launchers, ive found are very underrated and so is the blast master. the thousand sons' invulnerable save has won me alot of games too. I know you dislike them being khorne and nurgle, but abbadon's legion takes all (even though i dont have any khorne stuff except my vindicator is possessed by a khorn daemon).

mech players, and people who only play and have fun when they are tabling their opponent bother the fuck out of me, sure its fine to want to win, but why do you gotta be a dick about it? i mean yeah i play rhinos because thats a marine staple, they get me around to objectives and fights, and i have a vindicator, because it blows things up and is good with lash. im not talking about those mech players. i mean the ones where all you see on the board is land raiders and lasbacks or chimeras, lemans, and basilisks.

I like people like you, rich, who have the balls to put some guardsmen on the ground with some weapon teams and make their army look like a force; I admired that from last doubles. its fun to play them. its miserable standing up for five hours trying to blow up tank after tank begging for something to charge at

If you want to start playing in tournies and such this is something you will have to get over real quick.  The majority of Competative tournies are WAAC and this tends to bring out the the over the top lists and so on.  The key is to try and customize your list to where its confortable for you but also able to withstand the onslaught.  And as Rich stated making a 2500 point army for tournies is a mistake because literally I know of 1 tourny the entire year that is 2500 and thats Ard Boyz.  Most tournies range from 1500-2000.

On a list critique I think you need to try and swerve from the gimicks and go with what will work.  The DP are good but there is no need for 2 of them.  Also just adding 1 sqaud of 1ksons or noise marines will hinder you more then it will help you.  Trust in rich on the Chaos side he has a good grasp on that army.
As for finding the tournies.  That all depends are you looking to do competative tournies such as Grand Tournaments or are you looking to do the local seen.  There aremany areas to look for both.

Dave,

If you go to Dakkadakka.com, there are people who run and host events that post there regularly.  Being that they have quite a wide range of an audience, you're likely to find out more about tournaments happening in and around the area.  Of course, that would involve you having to travel quite a bit, should you decide to take these tournaments seriously.  I know Troy's been to a lot, both in and out of the MA area.  I'm sure he's got a lot experience dealing with these sort of things as well.

That being said, Adepticon is one of the bigger tournament settings of the year, and they've already announced it being on April 1st to 3rd, in Lombard, IL.  I've never been there before, but from what I hear, the turnout for 40K and Fantasy are pretty huge.

If / when we do a singles tournament we will run it at 1850.  There will probably be more info on this in the coming week(s).

We will likely use Adepticon Scenarios.

Like everyone has said, Ard Boyz is the only 2500 point event around.  It happens once a year.  If I were you I wouldn't focus too much on it.

I went to adepticon 2 years ago and it was a blast, I'm going back this year, and highly recommend it.

It probably draws the most competitive players across the country and some from other countries.
This is the top tier as far as competitive tournaments go and its all WAAC. As far as mech goes you got to a GT level tournment you will face them guaranteed. My advice is play against them as much as possible so you can find a way to beat them or in my case with the tau midagate your losses and go for a draw.

Troy, Rick, and I just came back from DaBoyz GT I would highly suggest this as your 1st GT. Mainly because its not all KP and BP. Comp, painting, and sportsmanship weigh heavily. Honestly I had 4 great games and 1 average game, which is awesome. (oh yea, shocker, at least to me Troy can drink!)

As far as looking for tournaments,I would suggest looking at a lot of the states local hobby store's website, they all post there tournies. I won't list the stores but a creative person can find them.
