Dave,

I am going to be down for my D&D game on Sunday, if I have a few minutes I am willing to give you a hand.  Because of the campaign I doubt I'll be able to play a game, maybe next week if I get there early enough.

What in particular are you finding your army coming up short in? Or where are you weaknesses? Could it just be your opponents level of experience with the game and their army?  If so sadly not much you can do but play more people till you get the hang of it.  A wise man once said "You learn more from losing than you do from winning"

ok ill be down shortly,

i think the problem is i want to field the stormraven, death company AND sanguinary guard, AND 2 strong hqs in one army at 2000 points. i just need help finding a direction to take it in vs having a bunch of super units that if one dies or gets trapped im screwed.

i thought of adding dante so the sanguinary guard is scoring but im not too sure how successful that may be.

see you soon!

I think that's the first thing you should work on :)

Stop fielding so many super units -- field an army that looks like a force (at least fluffwise). You don't need special characters to have a good time -- come up with your own captain or librarian or something!

Forget about the stormraven and and all those gimmicks. Start with a Meat and Potatoes list (heavy on the tactical squads/assault squads, only 1, non special character HQ) and get good with that. Then slowly work in all the other units you like.

You'll become better, faster that way.

That's actually the same way I learned to play too, Dave.  In fact, it was Mike that helped me learn that mentality too.  I know it's really nice to play with all the powerful named IC's in your codex, but like Mike said, practical wise and fluffwise, they aren't always the most sound way of building a list.

Ive recently been fielding Seth, why? hes 160 points and look!:
w   b   s   t   w   i   a   ld   sv
6   5   4   4   4   5   4  10  3+
iron halo, pistol, grenades, blood reaver (s8 rending chainsword)
fearless, ic, whirlwind (can autohit all in base to base instead of attacking), instincts (s4 hit for every roll of 1 to hit against him)

is he NOT a cheap hq that is totally strong and valid, just as good as a captain or other generic BA hq?

my problem is im drawn to death company, and feel like if i drop them i lose all my close combat prowess and my shooting is weak. also, terminators, sweet, sweet, terminators are my next favorite choice under death company. if only they had a rule to suppress the black rage.

I've seen Seth in action once.  He's pretty solid, as your normal named IC HQ choice.  His wargear makes him very effective in CC, but also a high priority on your opponents Kill list.  Keep him attached to a unit, and you'll be able to protect him pretty well.

Why not try shrinking the Death Company to it's minimum amount of models?  I don't know how many that is, but if I remember correctly, you can equip each model in the unit differently at your discretion.  Give that a whirl and see how that works for you.

Also take note that you don't necessarily have to take a special character EVERY MATCH... I mean, how many times does dante have to come to a fight? Dosnt he have other things to do :P? Even though I know that the game has now boiled down to using a named character or 2, sometimes its better to take the generic guy, it works for me!!

A couple of drinks were in me when I posted this last night lol, let me clarify what I meant... I meant to say that if you get good at playing a list without the special named guy with all these crazy abilities, you will be that much better when you do use them. I know its really hard to pass up the really good models, but a certain feeling of triumph happens when you whoop the shit out of a list with mundane guys. It also teaches you to be prudent and not so rash with your decisions (ie you wouldn't be as hasty to make a bad decision because this unit has x amount of ass whooping potential in comparison to the other). Idk that's just my oppinion though and ill repeat that I know this game has boiled down to everyone using named characters because they are innately better for a little more points (ex. Why take a hive tyrant when swarmlord is there... or the doom instead of a zoanthrope) but try it out, it might work for you!
