This is a community of highly intellectual and well read individuals. Let's discuss what you're reading now.
I'm reading a few titles. I just started to read The Demon in the Freezer by Richard Preston (guy who wrote The Hot Zone). I'm also reading The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Starkey. On top of that I'm reading the DND 4th ed Player's Handbook. Lastly, I'm reading (get ready for a long title) The Buccaneers of America A True Account of the Most Remarkable Assaults Committed of Late Years upon the Coasts of the West Indies by the Buccaneers of Jamaica and Tortuga (Both English and French): WHerein are contained more especially the Unparalleled Exploits of Sir Henry Morgan, our English Jamaican Hero, who sacked Porto Bello, burnt Panama, etc written by Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin (aka John Esquemeling) and printed in 1678.
The last one is a good book. Actually they are all real interesting and yes I tend to read a lot of titles at once. How about you?

When I'm not studying for class or reading for work, I fill my noggin' with trashy sci-fi novels.
Before I moved, I was reading Storm of Iron. I'm sure the book is in a box around here somewhere...

Have you checked out the graphic novel at all? Or, only read the novels? They seem to be real popular.
-
Novels right now. I'll check out the comics after I finish.
-
Hmm I'll have to add them to my list. Lots of people giving the novels major props. Worth trying one out to see if I enjoy.

This year I've been doing a lot of re-reading.
I'm currently reading Stephen King's "It" for the second time. After I've finished, I plan to read Gary Gygax's "Gord the Rogue" series again (in honor of the great man's passing).
I also read a huge amount of non-novel type literature, the bulk of it role-playing material (lately, lots and lots of D&D 4th edition stuff).

I'm reading "Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul". Very interesting, especially for a huge Batfan like me. I also just started The Destroyer series. Its the series that the movie "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins" was based on. I'm about half done with the first book and so far its good.

Google- Ted the Caver.
-
I just started the Dark Hersey series.Same universe we all know, but a thousand years or so earlier. So far, not bad. I tend to mostly to read sci-fi.
-
Last book I completely read was Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton. It is the account of a muslim in Norse country. 13th warrior, the movie, was loosely based off this book.
Book I am currently reading is Shooter, it is about a MFR sniper from waltham and his experience in iraq and his changing of the marine corp sniper doctorine

And people get mad at me when I read rules.
I'm reading the Once and Future King currently. Also some Sherlock Holmes and I try to keep up with the Horus Heresy series.
-
I talk about it a lot, I know, but I'm currently still reading the Shannara series. I've loved everything so far, so I'm going to be continuing. While I'm not a slow reader by any point, I never have time to. During school I barely read at all, and over the summer I do so many other things. Once I finally find the time to, though, I finish the book fast.
A series I plan to reread soon is the Earthsea setting by Ursula K. LeGuin. I'd reccomend it to anyone who likes fantasy, as it gives a very strange take on magic, incorporating some points of truename magic as well. It's a great cycle.
And that's what my literary life is.

I loved the Once and Future King. That's on my re-read list too :)

thou i am going to start re-reading the game of thrones series as the latest part book 5, Dance with Dragons will be out before the end of the year (i'm not holding my breath) Goerge RR martin is not known for his being able to keep to time tables.

Well,
A few Things have just closed. I finished Cornelius Ryans A bridge too far last week. Great book, given my current mode on airborne Guard this was kinda interesting. Heres' what happens when light inf meet lots of tanks...
Sandworms of Dune, yes it's all finally over, I suppose I should try and re-read the entire series in chronological order now. But not this week.
Now I've just started Day of battle. Concerning the allied invasion of Sicilly and Italy, looking good so far, who new the Americans accidentally shipped tons of Mustard gas shells to the invasion fleet.. That could have screwed things up :-[

I came across something that I think may be a fun way for people to find other books that you may like to read. Since this is a thread on reading I figured it is safe to put it here.
But, before I continue there's a bit of disclaimer/preamble to give. Most of you don't, but some do, know that I'm Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Dedham Public Library (http://www.dedhamlibrary.org) (my local library). Its an elected position that oversees a lot of things (million dollar budget, tons of trust funds, large staff, etc). I just found out about a cool new database that we got a free trial to for all of July called Books and Authors.
The thing I think you guys would like is a feature of that database. If you go to Books & Authors (http://access.gale.com/public/go/?key=3996_109976) then click (who, what, where, when).
You choose what you want (for example Warlord and Roman Empire) and it'll tell you what book(s) fit your requirements. In this case we get The Man on the White Horse.
I've been playing around with it and it gives some neat suggestions I'd never think of otherwise. Thought I'd share the info. Feel free to test it out as much as you like.

I was reading Brave New World by Aldous Huxley but since the summer has started i seem to have come to a pause in my reading. Im also workin on The Art of War by Machiavelli, but once again summer seems to have gotten the best of me.

I read Brave New World this year for English. I didn't really like it. Frankenstein, which we read at the same time to cover the topic, I loved.

I'm currently on Book 4 of Steven Erickson's Malazan series. I'm not sure how many books are even in the series, but it's awesome in it's detail and characterization. Easily on a par with George Martin's Game of Thrones series.
I'm also re-reading all of H.P. Lovecraft's stories that I have.
-
I'm still enjoying the Starkey book, I'm reading it leisurely, but I'm also really into the Monster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_(manga)) series by Naoki Urasawa (a graphic novel). It is a pretty interesting suspense story that also looks at the inner machinations of mankind. What makes a person a monster? How do we transform into one and what are the results?

I'm almost done with a great nonfic called Leisureville. It discusses retirement communities, one in particular in Florida called The Villages, that is an eye opener.
Seniors are giving up lots of freedoms to live in these private gated communities and then do nothing, it seems, but unprotected sex (seniors are the #1 fastest growing group of people getting STDs), drink, party, and play golf.
I recommend this for anyone wanting a good nonfic title or a chance to see what your parents/grandparents/you (not too far down the road) are in for.

Just finished Garth Nix's Seventh tower 1-3 and now am starting Descent of Angels.
-
I am reading the new Horus Heresy book, it has space battles and word bearer's
-
I am on page 2 of the prologue of book 1 (Eye of the World) of Wheel of Time. Is it supposed to be so dry so fast so soon at the start of the first book of the series? Will it improve if I stick with it for a few chapters? Please say yes.

I think the first book has some action in it, but I don't recall when it starts. That being said, I don't exactly condone starting the series. Its entertaining for a bit, but parts of it are slow and dry. I believe one of his billion page books covers one day.

I didn't like Descent of the Angels much. It didn't cover what I was hoping it would cover.

Wheel of Time is good for maybe 4 or 5 books and then it just starts to hit sucksville bordering prolongedtown.
It was milked after the 5th or 6th book to make $$ and really was terrible
As for Eye of the World, it has some exciting points and gets better by the end with some intense combat.
-

I love crappy fiction and had to put that afterbirth down.
-
I think I've missed some of the classics of the sci-fi/fantasy genre (mainly the fantasy aspect) and a lot of people talk about WoT at the store. I feel left out.

The only 2 real series in fantasy genre that are really worth noting are The Canticles of the Dragon by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and the Drizzt Series by R A Salvatore.
Michael Stackpole writes a great fantasy series, but it does not compare to either of the previous two
-
It is a shame, then I guess, that I do not like Salvatore. I've sent him many an angry letter in response to his massacres in the Star Wars realm. But, I'll look up Canticles of the Dragon. Maybe I'll enjoy that. I'm also partial to The Mists of Avalon.
-
Just picked up Battle for the Abyss from the Horus Heresy series. I will be starting it after Congo. Here's hoping it doesn't suck.
-
i have been reading the drizzit series for a a handful of year now, i just finished book VII Legacy.
and jonathan i think you might like Salvator now, for you see i am readin the Drizzit books in the graphic novel form put out by Devils Due Press. the artowrk is amazing and the books little thicker then normal graphic novels, deffently worth a look if you are a drizzit fan.
It's funny because had always been the biggest anti-drizzit fannboy, then few years back i picked up the first book in the Series graphic novel and it was great.

I'm a huge fan of manga and japanimation. That being said, some of my current favorites are Bleach, Negima, and (as most of you can guess) Rurouni Kenshin. Bleach and Negima are still being released in the U.S. in english, but I believe they may have finished already in Japan. Kenshin has ended for quite awhile now, but I always enjoy rereading the stories about my favorite animated samurai.
Other than manga though, I do enjoy reading fantasy novels. I never understood the popularity of Harry Potter until I read the first book. And once I did that, I couldn't stop.
But as of right now I'm currently reading my GMAT book, by Princeton Review... Grad school, here I come (hopefully)! :P
-
Bleach is surprisingly addicting. They take so long for the next volume to come out and I'm caught up. Oh well at least I can eagerly await the next one.
Haven't read Negima yet but heard wonderful things. I'm working my way through new issues of FABLES and Jack of Fables both by Bill Willingham. Great titles and some of the best writing published by DC in ages. I also strongly recommend The Walking Dead by Kirkman under the Image label.
I just got caught up with a fun and funny manga called Yakitate!! Japan, which is about bread making...oddly enough. Yet, somehow it works. My friend living in the Phillippines (right now for school) turned me on to this title.
Of course there's the great series DeathNote, just finished reading volume 13, that I think everyone should read. Plus, I'm really into Monster right now by Naoki Urasawa. It is a great thriller series.
I tend to read a lot and a lot at the same time. So, I'm listening to the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and When You Are Engulfed by Flames by David Sedaris (he's such a funny guy) in my car on audiobook format. Plus, I'm reading the Angel Park All Stars series by Dean Hughes (work related). I also started Tsubasa by CLAMP because I read all the published xxxHolic titles and thought I should catch up on the other side of the story.
To round it off I'm reading the new Robert Crais mystery titled Chasing Darkness and The Romanov Prophecy by Steve Berry. Just finished the new Judy Moody illustrated by my town's very own Peter Reynolds who is doing a major event at the library this month.
Lot of good stuff out there to read. Ben good luck with the GMAT book. I did a lot of GRE reading (Barron's, Princeton Review etc) and after awhile it gets to you...or at least it did me.
Oh yeah almost forgot I'm starting to read the new White Dwarf and a couple issues of Hello! magazine.
