Hey,
I'm thinking about getting into Warmachine. I really like the menoth model's. I had some questions though if some had some answers it would be great :)
-I've read that the stuff from the 2 player box set isn't that great for them and that I'd have to buy a new caster and the command crew for the exempler's. There seems to be a consensus to get the $50 starter set and a minimum choir unit and go from there. Are either of these options good?
-I have a little exposure to the privateer press world I played hordes for a bit when it first came out. I know it may be comparing apples to oranges but is there a play style for menoth that is similiar toa 40k army?
Thanks for any replies

I just started Warmachine (Menoth), but here are my initial thoughts.
I think whoever told you that you would have to buy a new caster after the 2 player battlebox is crazy. Kreoss is one of the best castors Menoth has. He is also very beginner friendly and his feat is awesome. The Jacks are all really good out of the boxed set. Crusader is a cheap beatstick with a lot of heath, Vanquisher has a nice big gun, and the Repenter has a flame thrower which is awesome for infantry units. I haven't used the Cinnys yet, so I cannot say anything about them. Throw a min choir and you have a pretty nice 15 point starting army.
Playing Menoth is nothing like anything I have played in 40k.
Battlecollege (http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/) is a great place to go and they do a good job explaining all the units.

Thanks!
I'll check that link out. The starter set seems like a good deal I'm trying to convince a friend to get into the game but don't want to lead him towards Khador but it would be convenient. Does the mini-rulebook in that set contain everything in the big book like all of the other army stat's or just Khador & Menoth.

Warmachine tends to be about synergy. Normally, 1 or two models work well together and things happen.
By comparison, Menoth is like a zealous Rube-Goldberg machine of death.
The 40k analogy is a little rough as there is so little actual synergy in 40k when compared to WM. Most everything in WM needs something to use its special ability on another to make it function better. So I suppose you could think of "Which 40k army is the most buff heavy and has a wide range of troops from crappy infantry that are just there to catch bullets to big ol nigh unkillable heavy infantry (bastions) in the right hands?"
Menoth warjacks are terrible on their own. If you add on the choir and other things, suddenly, the warjacks can really shine.
Also, just post on the boards about splitting the box if you want to, many people are up for it. It's the ABoR of the WM world.

One thing that drew me to the game; you can play whatever style you want with whatever action you want and at least have a good game. Each faction has it's strengths and weaknesses but they all cover the same bases. Much of the variation of how your army plays will come from the warcaster/warlock. Yes, some models and casters are more competitive than others, but the game is all about taking your strengths and pushing to obscene levels.
Menoth is largely considered the warjack faction because of the numerous synergies. However don't let that discourage you from playing heavy infantry if you like that playstyle. Kreoss2 turns infantry in monsters, and Harbinger can support tons of warjacks or infantry with her martyrdom ability.
The mini rulebook only contains the bare bones rules. There are few pictures and all the story material was removed.

I'm going to get the rulebook (if I can find it) and the choir this weekend. Something to read and something to paint. Most likely I'll be posting something up about splitting up a player force in a week or so :)

The mini rulebook is handy. Its full color and documents the core rules of the game. Its missing a few things, but nothing you couldn't live without. If you decide you like the game then I'd upgrade to the full-size book, but even then it probably wouldn't be necessary.
Personally I think the content for Menoth in the two player starter is superior than the standard battlegroup set. Upgrading one of the lights to a Vanquisher is a good pickup for Kreoss whose feat can really maximize its effectiveness.
You will need a Choir. A Vassal of Menoth would also be a good pickup for early on.

Is it just me or is it hard to find the rule book checked 3 stores today none had it including BG
-
Sometimes Privateer Press gets behind on their orders, but if there isn't any on the shelf never be afraid to ask any of the fine gentlemen working there to place an order for you and they should get the shipment in by Thursday or Friday with your name on it. However I do have a spare if you need one to borrow in the meantime.
-
I just find it odd that a game that is that popular that 3 stores didn't have a single rule book between them. I am going to order one, just gives me pause about getting into the game if the primary source material can't be found easily.
-
Popular stuff sells out. A whole mess load of local 40k players are trying the game all at once. I'm not surprised the rulebooks were sold out.
-
I got all my stuff together and got someone to split the starter with me.
Per advice here and what I read I also got a choir. Hopefully it will all be in hands by next week to start some painting/assembly and get some games in!
Thanks for your help.

You and your friend can always drop by during league night and borrow/use some models for demo games. I have the contents of the 2-Player Khador Box painted if your friend wants to test them out.

Thanks
I there any good sites people can suggest to get good resin bases for them?
I see in most of the pictures that the menoth mini's have broken up flag stone on there bases, is there a reason for this?

Given the lack of conversion opportunities, it's just a way to add some personal artistic touch.
Although, you may notice some models come with scenic bases. For instance, the Cygnar warcaster epic Caine is standing on a rock with the Cygnar Cygnus on it. It's just how the model was made. For a long time, epic warcasters meant more scenic bases from PP.
-
I noticed there wasn't much conversion potential.
I'm going to be working the color fade on the model's, mainly fading red to yellow on the armor trim plating and grey to white on the armor itself. I've also thought of doing some fading from white - red - yellow on area's like the arms, I'm not sure how this will turn out, I'll probably try it on one of the little jacks.
How pose able are the model's would it be hard to reposition the legs on a jack to stand on a rock or dramatic strut?
-
It's going to require some cutting. I would imagine just changing leg stances shouldn't be too bad considering how blocky the joints are.
Normally, the legs are one piece and attach right to the torso / pelvis. That's my experience with the plastic jacks anyway.

When it comes to resin bases I'm a fan of Dragon Forgehttp://www.dragonforge.com/ (http://www.dragonforge.com/) and Secret Weapon http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=79 (http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=79).

I like secret weapons town square one's.
-
I did my IG using dragonforge bases and while they look good i've since switched to scibor bases out of poland. FAR more detail and somewhat more money

Thanks

I bought some Kerr and King for my retribution and I like the quality and sculpts:

Cool bases, possibly the worst website I've ever seen.

Yeah, those are awesome.

Well, looks like I'll be getting my WM terrain there. ;D
