Wizards of the Coast Released Changes to D&D Organized Play

WOTC

Wizards of the Coast has released details for changes coming to the Dungeons and Dragons Organized Play program, now titled the D&D Adventurers League which will accompany the release of Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition according to hobby news website ICv2.com.  In addition to the new name, Wizards has announced a new three-part program with overarching storyline themes (D&D Encounters, D&D Expeditions, and D&D Epics), as well as a new monthly scheduling and reporting structure for stores.

NEW D&D Logo

Each storyline event, in this case, The Tyranny of Dragons, will begin with a D&D Epics kickoff event hosted by Wizards at a select major conventions.  For Tyranny of Dragons, this event will take place at Gen Con Indy in August.  The goal of the event is to create buzz about the new season of OP, and get players excited to head back to stores to participate in the weekly D&D Encounters or D&D Expeditions sessions.

D&D Encounters will be the baseline store events, presenting the first portion of each storyline published adventure in an organized play kit.  The kits, which are free to participating Wizards Play Network (WPN) retailers at Gateway level or above, will introduce players to the main storyline and provide enough play to get players from 1st level to about 5th level.  Afterwards, players may continue by purchasing the rest of the adventure from stores, or participate in other play programs.  For the first season, the adventure will lead to a purchase of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, the first adventure published for the new edition of D&D.

The redesigned kits support up to 20 players and four Dungeon Masters, and will include gameplay aids and new components like certificates for special items or awards, table tents, blank character sheets, and more.  The adventure portion will be available as a complimentary PDF from Wizards.

D&D Expeditions play is intended for higher-level character play, either for experienced players or those that have completed the D&D Encounters portion of OP.  The organized play kits are available free to any WPN retailer at Core level or above.  Each month, these smaller monthly kits will contain a series of “convention-style” adventures, usually one-offs (about 4 hours), and certificates for special items in the adventure.  Stores are encouraged to use these kits to support local convention events, and contact Wizards’ retail support team if they require more than one kit.

Scheduling and reporting will be updated for the August D&D Encounters session, and qualifying stores can begin scheduling on June 8.  On July 8, scheduling opens for the September D&D Expeditions sessions, as well as that month’s D&D Encounters.  The process for reporting D&D Play has been simplified as well:  stores only need to enter their DMs and add players as a list now, rather than table by table.

What do you think gamers? Do these changes to the Dungeons & Dragons organized play program sound interesting? Let us know in the comments below!

To celebrate 40 years of entertaining players and to coincide with the Tyranny of Dragons product line-up, Wizards of the Coast has also unveiled a new logo for the brand. The redesign includes a larger ampersand that is clearly a fire-breathing dragon, conveying an element of danger with its sharp edges and barbs on his tale and evoking some of the main elements that D&D stands for, including adventures and fearsome monsters.

In addition, Wizards has partnered with WizKids  to produce a new line of D&D miniatures (see “WizKids Releases Details for ‘D&D Fantasy’ Miniatures“)  that fans can use in conjunction with their Tyranny of Dragons adventures, as well as complement their tabletop RPG experience brought forth by the new rules set. With these new minis, players can expect high-quality, pre-painted plastic miniatures featuring iconic heroes and villains straight from the Forgotten Realms.

The Latest on ‘Attack Wing: Dungeons & Dragons’

Earlier this week Wizkids updated some of the details on Attack Wing: Dungeons & Dragons, scheduled for release on October 1st of this year.

These days it’s super rare that a game catches my interest and holds it for so long, especially through development, but Attack Wing: Dungeons & Dragons is something that I’m really looking forward to.  In case you haven’t been following it, Attack Wing: Dungeons & Dragons uses the FlightPath mechanics that were previously seen in Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Trek: Attack Wing.  As players we’ll get to control dogfighting dragons, while also having forces on the ground waste our opponents with!  Dragons, giants, and spell casting elves?  Sign me up!

The Starter Set

Some information and preview pictures of the starter set were originally shared at the Gama Trade Show, but WizKids passed on the final solicitation information recently.  The Attack Wing: D&D Starter Set will include three pre-painted plastic dragons (Red, Blue, and Copper) with bases and pegs, three maneuver dials, cards and tokens.  It’ll retail for $49.99.

Wave 1 Expansions

I’m pretty psyched that there looks to be more than a couple expansions scheduled for launch.  I can’t wait to see how they’ve handled the new ground element, which is something entirely new just for Attack Wing: Dungeons & Dragons.

The Green Dragon Expansion Pack will include a pre-painted Green Dragon plastic miniature with base and pegs, a maneuver dial, cards and tokens.  It will retail for $24.99.

dragons2

The Sun Elf Wizard Expansion Pack will include a pre-painted Sun Elf Wizard plastic miniature with base and pegs, a maneuver dial, cards and tokens.  It will retail for $14.99.

The Frost Giant Expansion Pack will include a pre-painted Frost Giant plastic miniature with base and pegs, a maneuver dial, cards and tokens.  It will retail for $24.99.

The Sun Elf Guard Troop Expansion Pack will include six pre-painted Sun Elf Guard Troop plastic miniatures with bases and pegs, a maneuver dial, cards and tokens.  It will retail for $24.99.

sunelfwarriors

The Hobgoblin Troop Expansion Pack will include six pre-painted Hobgoblin Troop plastic miniatures with bases and pegs, a maneuver dial, cards and tokens.  It will retail for $24.99.

hobgoblins

The Dwarven Ballista Expansion Pack will include a pre-painted Dwarven Ballista plastic miniature with base and pegs, a maneuver dial, cards and tokens.  It will reatils for $14.99.

The Wraith Expansion Pack will include two pre-painted Wraith plastic miniatures with base and pegs, two maneuver dials, cards and tokens.  It will retail for $19.99.

wraiths

That about does it for the first wave.  I’ve heard that the second wave will have things like a black dragon and some angels.

I’m not sure what the points for each figure will look like, but the idea of piloting a red dragon, a black dragon, and a band of hobgoblins seems pretty neat to me! Let me know what you think in the comments!

Announcing Next Season of D&D Encounters

DND Logo

Wizards of the Coast has announced that the launch weekend for Dead in Thay, the next season of D&D Encounters, is May 10-11, with the season to run on Wednesdays from May 14th to August 6th.  The adventure by Scott Fitzgerald Gray, part 2 of the Dreams of the Red Wizards Sundering storyline, is directly tied to the previous adventure, Scourge of the Sword Coast.  It’s also loosely connected to Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle.

In this adventure, the Bloodgate must be destroyed in order to stop Szass Tam, the lich lord of Thay and his Red Wizards.  Reporting results of the game will continue to impact the future of the Forgotten Realms.

Dead in Thay will lead into The Tyranny of Dragons, a multi-platform event tied to the launch of the next edition of Dungeons and Dragons.

Journey Prerelease

Wizards of the Coast encourages D&D Encounters players to use the D&D Next rule set, while producing the adventures so they can be played with any D&D rules.

Update Coming to Popular ‘Dungeon’ Game

Wizards of the Coast announced they will release an updated version of the classic fantasy board game Dungeon! with new box art to appeal to a new generation of family gamers on June 17th.

The new box is designed to appeal to long time Dungeons & Dragons players, as well as reach a new audience of younger players.  The game has gone through several incarnations since it was first released in 1975, and most recently updated in 2012, but the basic game play remains the same.  Players take the role of Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, or Wizard, and explore a multi-level dungeon to find treasure.  The treasure is guarded by progressively harder monsters the deeper players venture.  The goal is to collect enough treasure and be the first to escape the dungeon.

Journey Prerelease

The box contains 8 Hero standees (2 each of Rogues, Clerics, Fighters and Wizards), 165 cards (monster, treasure and spell), 139 tokens (number, lose a turn, defeated, and magic sword), 2 6-sided dice, a game board, and a rule sheet.  The game is for 1- 8 players, ages 8 and up.

Interested in this classic board game? Contact us and let us know; buy it in June at your local Battleground Games & Hobbies!

Would you rather go to PAX East 2014 or to your Prom?

T-Minus 29 DAYS, 09 HRS, 36 MINS, 41 SECS

We are now less than a month away from PAX East 2014. Even better, they released the schedule of panels and tournaments moments ago. There is a slight catch, though. I’m actually not sure if it’s complete. One reason is that they don’t have the “Magic: The Gathering” tournaments listed on there. Also, from the persons themselves, there are panels I was told were going to be there that are not. Finally, usually the official PAX twitter handle tweets out big announcements like this. We’ll have to see in the next few days, I guess. However, for now we can get excited about what IS on the schedule.

Friday, April 11th

If you’re a miniatures player then you’ll be interested in this. As soon as the doors open there will be “Warhammer” and “Warmachine” tournaments in the Tabletop area. Keep in mind though, a lot of these tournaments are set up for new and casual players. However, there is a 500-point, 10-player tournament. There is no word if there are prizes for this. The other tournaments they have listed do have prizes you can earn throughout the entire weekend.

Something that may give a shot (if my schedule allows me) is the “Star Wars: X-Wing” miniatures tournament. These are 100-point tournaments and are hosted by Fantasy Flight Games. The cool part is that they will be awarding promotional prizes  to the participants. Which means I don’t think I have to worry about being bad at the game!

Later that afternoon, Battleground Games & Hobbies owner, Derek Lloyd, will be participating on a panel titled “What is Happening to Tabletop Roleplaying Games?” Here is the official description from the PAX East website:

“The past 20 years have been a roller-coaster ride for RPGs. The release of ‘Magic: The Gathering’ in 1993 changed the fundamental nature of the hobby gaming industry and forever altered the business of making and selling RPGs.  Explore the recent history of the category through the lens of Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, and hear predictions for the future of the hobby.”

So, if you’ve got the time, go support him. Don’t forget to bring some underwear to throw at him while he’s on stage. Maybe we can make some signs as well. If you have any ideas, then leave a comment below.

Another event I may give a shot are the “My Little Pony CCG” tournaments. If you’re a Brony or Pegasister at heart, or are obsessed with card games in general like I am, then you may want to give these tournaments a shot. This tournament will be a sealed tournament. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to this one, they have other tournaments listed throughout the weekend.

Saturday, April  12th

Get ready for another fun filled day. Hopefully your feet won’t be hurting you as much as mine will be.

To kick things off, there will be an “Android: Netrunner” tournament. You’re required to bring your own decks for this one. It will be run by Fantasy Flight Games and they will have promotional prizes to give out to the participants. I haven’t played this in a more-than-casual setting, so, I am looking forward to this one. I hope I can make it.

The biggest thing I hope to be in is the “Magic: The Gathering” panel. That will be held at 1:30 PM in the Albatross Theatre. I plan on live-blogging from inside. So, if you can’t make it for some reason, I suggest to subscribing to my Examiner feed so you can keep up-to-date with all the news coming out of there. Here is the official description of the panel from the PAX website:

“Gods, heroes and monsters! What challenges will Planeswalker Elspeth Tirel face next? Learn more about this Hero’s Path as we Journey Into Nyx in the third set of the Theros block. Do you have what it takes to complete the Hero’s Path? Come by the Magic: The Gathering panel to get a glimpse of the Journey Into Nyx, get the inside track on the Prerelease and talk to some of the key R&D and Program leaders from Wizards of the Coast.”

The panel will be hosted by Mark Purvis who is the Brand Director for Wizards of the Coast. I wonder if other people will join him though. There were quite a few people last year on the panel.

Sunday, April 13th

This is usually just a day for me to enjoy the rest of the convention. I remember last year it was a little annoying because I had to drag all my bags to the convention center because I had to check out of my hotel.

Now I know I only live about 30 minutes outside of the city, but getting a hotel during the convention is really worth it, I think. It’s convenient because I feel I can come and go whenever I want to. If I wasn’t staying close in the city, I’d feel stuck. I want to be able to enjoy myself and not have that thought worrying over my head. It also allows me to be able to meet more people and hang out with them over the course of the weekend. Also, I’m staying on the edge of Chinatown in the Theatre district this year. With that said, I definitely plan on getting dinner at one of my favorite spots “The Gourmet Dumpling House.” This place is always packed, but well worth the wait. Let me know if you’d like to join.

Time permitting, there is something that you all may want to check out. The creators of “Penny Arcade,” Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins (along with Scott Kurtz and a special guest), get together and play a live game of “Dungeons & Dragons.” If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend checking it out on YouTube. There are clips of their entire playthroughs from PAX Prime. They are extremely entertaining.
