Dragons of Tarkir (DTK) will be released on Friday, March 27th and we will have a full line-up of events for you to crack packs, build decks and play Magic at both of our stores! The weekend will kick off with our flagship Sealed Deck-style event, but with a Fat Pack!
The Battleground Games & Hobbies Dragons of Tarkir Fat Pack Challenge is taking place THIS coming Friday night at both locations (run as our FNM). These are the ultimate sealed events – where you open packs, build a deck and play with just the contents of a Dragons of Tarkir Fat Pack!
The concept of a Fat Pack Challenge is pretty simple. Each player will receive an Dragons of Tarkir Fat Pack with which to build a 40-card deck. Players may use ONLY what is inside of their Fat Pack to construct their decks. 23
We’ve got two of these events for you, one at each Battleground location:
Abington and Plainville:

Welcome back to a late edition of “This week in Magic.” This weekend is the Dragons of Tarkir prerelease. Who else is just as excited as I am? Oh, you are? Really, Nick Lowe? Well you’re in luck. This week’s blurb is all about my top picks for the Dragons of Tarkir prerelease. If you want a better chance to 4-0 or 3-0-1 your events, then these are cards you may want to look out for.
Now of course, there are obvious bombs. So we’re going to ignore most of the rares as well as the mythics. Today, we’re going to be mostly focusing on some of the unsung heroes: the commons and uncommons. Check them out in no particular order.
There is nothing more annoying than your opponent playing a first turn 1/1 creature. Especially if you can’t follow it up with one of your own. That’s why the Dunecaster is one of the cards I think you should look out for. It may not kill the 1/1 creature, but it sure can block it al day as a 0/2. The real kicker is the extra ability to tap own another creature.
You opponent just cast a big fatty? Well, as long as it doesn’t fly, the Dunecaster has your back covered. As long as you have the mana, and the Dunecaster is untapped, than that big, bad fatty isn’t hitting you any time soon. Just keep in mind that the Dunecaster is still only a 0/2 which means it can still be killed quite easily.
I am a big fan of this spell. Yeah it costs five mana, which can be a little high, but I think it has a lot of potential. I think we’re going to see a limited environment full of big creatures (and by that I mean mostly dragons). Bouncing them back into your opponent’s hand can almost be considered like a time walk for yourself.
The key to this spell is the rebound ability. It makes paying five mana almost worth it. You opponent may think twice about re-casting that big guy of their if they know its only going to get bounced again. Keep in mind the spell can target other permanents. So any pesky enchantments or planeswalkers can go bye bye as well.
If I had to pick a card to be the top choice, this would probably be the pick. Death Wind may just be the best removal spell in the prerelease. It get’s around indestructibility, it has a very low casting cost, and it’s an instant. It’s an uncommon, so you’ll be lucky to be running more than one in your deck.
Another great thing about this card is that it’s totally splashable. Is that even a word? Splashable? Anyways, for only XB I would make it worth your while to splash just for it. Should you splash for only one copy? I don’t think so. Splash for two or more. It should be worth it.
This card is bonkers. I think it’ll even get played in standard. I even have a deck list brewing in my head as I type this. In limited, it’s going to be that card when you reveal your opponent will go, “ugh.” Be warned, I will flip the table if you play this card against me this weekend. I promise. (Okay, maybe I won’t, but in my mind, I will be flipping the table).
One of the best parts of this card is that your creatures don’t have to make contact to kill your opponent. Simply turn them sideways and then cast this spells, or vice versa. However, it’s probably best if you cast it after – for the pure shock factor.
I once drafted a deck with three copies of Act of Treason. It was one of the main reasons I split for the top prize that night. Lose Calm may cost an additional mana, but the added effect is well worth it. The best scenario is for you to take your opponent’s creature when they’ll be left with less than the appropriate amount of blockers.
Well, that’s going to be it for now. This weekend is going to be a blast. In case you didn’t’ catch it the first time. here is the full schedule for your convenience:

Popular gaming blog website Sprites and Dice wrote a in-depth review about their experience at this year’s PAX East convention in Boston a few weeks ago. In their review, they mention Battleground Games & Hobbies, specifically, the popular Dungeons & Dragons Arena demo that we offer convention-goers each year. Enjoy this excerpt from their article:
“On Friday, [I] spent a great deal of my time with … Battleground Games & Hobbies. There was a very good reason I spent so much time with these stores: the people there were friendly, welcoming, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. I don’t bring this up just as a plug for … [this] stores (although if you’re lucky enough to be near one of them, I highly recommend checking them out), but because [they] exemplified what makes someplace like PAX East so great for gamers.”
“…since [my] first PAX in 2013, one of my favorite stations has been Battleground’s Dungeons and Dragons Arena. It’s a constant, cycling battle where players pick a character, enter the arena, and fight until they die. Battleground has low-level demo characters available for free, or you can buy anything from a regular fighter to a full-grown dragon at their booth. Granted that makes this a bit of a pay-to-win; but then, the whole point is to get players to buy their merchandise. Since there are no prizes up for grabs and there’s no high score kept, it truly doesn’t detract from the experience.
What really makes this station stand out (in fact, what makes it impossible not to notice) is the man who runs it, a gentleman by the name of Craig Baker. Each action is described with melodramatic, over-the-top narration. Each round of combat begins with a rousing cry of, ‘Battleground Arena continues! Huzzah!’ Craig’s enthusiasm and energy are infectious and seemingly limitless; he keeps a steady stream of people coming and going all weekend.”
We kindly encourage you to check out both Sprites and Dice as well as the original article, which can be found by clicking here.
We look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s PAX East and thank everyone for visiting us and your continued support.

Alderac Entertainment Group will release Game of Crowns in June, according to hobby news website ICv2.com.
The game is designed by Remo Conzadori, with art by Pascal Quidault. Players control one of the nine noble houses of the Ruelen Empire, and with the ruler’s death, they are each attempting to gain enough control and influence to claim the crown. Players can exchange cards and favors through diplomacy, or attack opponents through warfare to gain what they need.
The box contains 90 House cards, 18 Vote cards, 11 Guest cards, 37 Raven tokens, 9 Reference cards, and a round track. The game is for 4-9 players, ages 14 and up, and plays in 45 minutes. MSRP is $29.99, which is a great price point.
Does this sound familiar? If it does, perhaps that’s because it seems awfully similar in concept to Game of Thrones. Even a similar name.
What do you think of Game of Crowns? Let us know in the comments below or sound of on Facebook or Twitter! If you’d like to see this game on our shelves, contact us here!
