Store Is Well Represented At The 2015 Weiss Schwarz National

weiss top8 local players

This past weekend, Bushiroad held the 2015 Weiβ Schwarz Nationals in New York. We had several members of our community represent Battleground Games & Hobbies at the tournament. And while the road to Worlds ended a little short, our guys still did an amazing job and we are extremely proud of them. Johnny, Victor, and Nick all made the Top 8 of the tournament. Johnny, even made it to the Top 4. So we wanted to take a moment to say congratulations on a job well done!

If you see any of these guys at your next event, shake their hand, give them a hug, or high-five them!

Weird Spoilers Hit The Internet. Are They Real?

new eldrazi mana

Some strange news has been hitting the internet today regarding the next set for Magic: The Gathering. Take a look at these two cards that are supposedly in the next set. There are some features that should start ringing alarms. The first thing is a new “color.” The land “Wastes” produces some kind of special Eldrazi mana. Further more, it seems you going to need this kind of mana to cast the new version of Kozilek.

Before you start screaming at the top of your lungs, you also need to remember that, as of right now, these cards are:

totally unconfirmed

.

So until then, enjoy the speculation that is going around, have some fun planning out your next deck, but do not set your plans in stone.

Kickstarter Spotlight: ‘The Banner Saga: Warbands’

banner saga board game box cover

“A cooperative, miniatures board game that deals with the difficulties and consequences of decision making.”

If there was ever a board game you may need to own, this one might be the game. Check out “The Banner Saga: Warbands.” This also might be the first board game that I’ve seen where you don’t need any dice to play. It’s all about the decisions you and your team make, and the rest is in the cards you flip over.  The Banner Saga: Warbands is a fully cooperative game for 2-4 players. The point of the game is for players take up the role of the leaders in a warband tasked with keeping the warband together and alive.

As of now the box will contain, “…a world map, 4 player boards, 12 bannermen & follower cards, 54 event and camp cards, 10 oversized skirmish cards, 10 mission cards, a skirmish board, 30 plastic miniatures and rules.” The game currently has 17 days to go, as of November 16th, and has made well over their original goal of $50K with a little over $116K. Those who back the Kickstarter can expect their game sometime in August of 2016. There hasn’t been any official announcement on if and when it will hit retail shelves.

Magic Card of the Day: Oath of Druids

oath of druids

Alright folks. Check it out in all it’s glory. The MTG card of the day is Oath of Druids. This card is very near and dear to my heart. It’s been the only vintage deck I’ve had the pleasure of playing, and it will be the only one I’ll play. This card just feels like cheating with out the whole cheating thing. Sometimes I wish they would reprint this card, but if they did, all hell would break loose. Could you imagine something like Dragonlord Atarka or Ulamog coming into play on turn three? It’s bad enough we’re able to ramp both creatures out faster than normal, but to get them out that fast without having to pay as much mana is absurd.

Earlier this year, the vintage championships were held. The winning deack – Oath of Druids. If memory serves me correct, it came down to the final game of the match. After a mulligan to six cards, the eventual winner won on turn one. It was very anti-climactic, but that’s how powerful the card is.

When I ran the deck, it was playing creatures like Akroma, Angel of Wrath and Spirit of the Night to beat down your opponent. Now it plays more like a combo deck setting up a way to stick Griselbrand on the board and protecting him once he’s out there. Typically, once he’s there, it’s hard to overcome his power as well.

If you have any suggestions for a card we should feature, then let us know in the comment section below!

Extra Life Recovery Day!

extralife2015 facebook banner

Well, we did it! We survived 24hrs of gaming! There were people playing Magic, X-Wing, tons of board games, and even Rockband! At 1AM, we even played a 30-person game of Ultimate Werewolf. When 5 AM hit, waffles were made for those who stuck around. Near the end, an epic roll off for a date with Derek happened. While someone had to win, some hearts were broken. In the end, sleep schedules may have been wrecked, but, all together, we helped raise over $2000 for charity.

I’d like to take this time to thank a few people who were a lot of help during the event. First of all, thanks to Derek because without him and the store, this event wouldn’t have happened. A big thanks to Andrew Pegg-Wheat for hosting the stream and making waffles. Of course a huge thanks goes out to everyone who donated during the event. Whether it was money or something to be donated, it all helped out.

I’ll definitely reflect more about how this year’s event went, but for now I just wanted to get this quick message out to all of you. We’re working on getting some of the video that was taken up on YouTube, but that may take some time. When it does go up, we’ll be sure to let you all know. I hope you’ve all recovered by now. As soon as I got home yesterday, I crashed right into my bed and it was glorious.

I’ve already started planning for next year. If you weren’t able to make it this year, then I hope you can make it to the next one. Its going to be great. For now, enjoy some of this pictures from the event.
