At this year’s Extra Life event we were able to set up a live stream and record a lot of the action. Sadly, because we were so new at this, some of the footage didn’t make it. However, the action we did manage to save has finally shown itself. Here is part 1 of the draft portion:
And here is part 2:
In this video, we’re watching one of the Abington locals, Jon Kerman, in action. Feel free to comment how bad (or good) you think he did in the comment section. Please remember to be respectful and don’t flame him. He’s still trying to figure this game out. Check back in a few days where I’ll post the rest of his draft, and then I’ll release some of his game play.
PS. Don’t mind the other vids on my channel. As a freelance journalist, I sometimes host game trailers. Feel free to watch them as well. In the future we may start a Battleground channel to centralize the video content.

In case you missed it, today, during the World Magic Cup, the previously spoiled Kozilek and Wastes were confirmed. Going into today’s announcement the big question was what that strange mana symbol on Kozilek and Wastes. As it turns out, that symbol is the new symbol for “colorless” mana. Now, you’re probably saying to yourself, “But I thought colorless mana was already a thing.” It is, but now we’ll be dealing with colorless mana and generic mana. I know it sounds a little confusing, so let me try to break it down for you. First take a look at this tweet from Wizards.
See Kozilek's casting cost? That's the colorless mana symbol. You pay 8 mana of any color and 2 more colorless mana pic.twitter.com/397ZlehW91
— Magic: The Gathering (@wizards_magic) December 11, 2015
Everything you need to know in contained in that one tweet. Kozilek’s casting cost is a total of 10 mana. Now, 8 of that mana can come from any land – Forests, Plains, Swamps, Islands, Mountains, and even the new Wastes. Two of the ten mana, however, has to specifically come from the sources that specifically make colorless mana. That means lands like Llanowar Wastes and Shivan Reef can be used to make colorless mana because they give you the option to tap them for either their respective colors or (specifically) colorless mana. However, and this is important, lands like Hinterland Harbor or Stomping Ground cannot because they only make colored mana.
Let’s take a look at an artifact like Sol Ring. Sol Ring will still cost you (1) to cast. That means you can use any type of mana to cast it. However, the mana it produces is now considered (c)(c). That’s two colorless mana. This type of mana will fulfill the colorless requirement needed by the new Kozilek.
Are you still with me?
Now let’s talk about Wastes. According to the announcement, Wastes is a basic land. But the special thing about Wastes is that it does not have a subtype. So it’s not a Forest or a Swamp. Still, effects that retrieve basic lands will allow you to get the land Wastes. And by effects, I mean cards like Evolving Wilds.
Another important thing to know about is how Wastes will affect your drafting game, especially if you play online. Wastes will not be a land you can add at the end of the draft. In fact, in order to have it in your deck, you need to actually draft the land. Now, R&D understood what kind of issues that this may cause. So, in order to address that issue what they’ve done is made the card twice as common as other commons. So, there should be plenty to go around. In addition, there will be other ways to make colorless mana whether it be by other non-common lands, artifacts, or even creatures.
Basically, the TL:DR version of the story is colorless mana is now specifically categorized.
One last thing. Due to the fact that Wastes is a basic land, you can also have as many copies of this land in your constructed deck. Keep that in mind if you plan on building something in Standard. Also, they haven’t said if these lands will be printed outside of this set or in the future (mainly because it’s too early), but those of you who play Commander may want to get your hands on a stack of these as they may become a limited commodity.
I know that I’m repeating a lot of what had been said in the announcement video, but sometimes you just have to see it to believe it and understand it. I hope this helped you understand things a little bit more. If you have any comments or questions, make sure do leave something in the box below. See you all next time!

It was kind of a slow day in the neighborhood as far as gaming news goes. So here is something cool that I covered as far as nerd culture goes. A musical group by the name Player:Piano released a new video today on their YouTube channel. They’re well known for their on-the-spot covers of video game songs. Some of those songs include Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and the Moon Theme from Duck Tales.
This time around, they’ve gone and created a 10-minute video called the “Ultimate Star Wars Medley.” This epic cover spans the score of all six movies. It’s so good that I’ve had it on repeat for most of the day. And if you’re friends with me on Facebook, you may have noticed all the link to my coverage today. This is for those of you who haven’t seen it yet. So without further ado, enjoy the show!
Player:Piano is mainly made up of pianist Sonya Belousova and filmmaker Tom Grey.

What do you get when you combine Fast & Furious with Cthulhu? The answer is the board game Fast & Fhtagn. I have no idea who to pronounce the second word, but this game looks like a lot of fun. Who would have ever thought that you could combine these two things? Someone did and now it’s a game. Here’s the low down as to how the game is played,
First of all, how cool would it be to have a Cthulhu themed car in real life? Second, the fact that the track is unpredictable means that you and your friends are in for a lot of fun.
So when you get your copy of the game, here’s what you can expect in the box: 110 cards, 26 street mats, 29 tokens, 2 dice, and 3 reference sheets. The game can handle 3 – 6 players, and is for ages 13 and up. It takes about 45 – 90 minutes to play and the MSRP is set at $29.95.
Fast & Fhtagn is set for release in March of 2016.

There exists a card in Magic that some people despise. A card that can mess with someone’s game plan so bad that when you play it, you become target number one. That card is Teferi’s Puzzle Box. I can’t tell you the number of times that this has cause people to make me their number one priority in Commander games. Well, either you love me or you hate with me all of your passion.
Obviously, on a personal level, I love this card. It allows you to dig through your deck in a matter of a few turns. Now when you’re playing with a deck that consists of 100 cards, how could you not love that? Well, I guess if you have a hand you really like and then you’re forced to throw it away. It’s not like the cards go into your graveyard though. Oh well.
I highly recommend giving this card a shot. The best part is that since it’s an artifact, it doesn’t matter what colored mana you have out. And it only costs four mana. Seriously, people, how can you hate this card? Learn to love it. Learn to embrace it.
